Second time in Verona for Charles H. Traub.
Il Meccanico presents Skid Row, a series of portraits taken by the artist in the late 1970s in the marginalized areas of Uptown Chicago and the Bowery in New York.
Through his black-and-white photographs, Traub seeks to capture the dignity and humanity of the residents and unhoused people of these neighborhoods. Over time, many of the areas he photographed have been transformed by gentrification, erasing much of their history and culture—making Traub’s work an important testimony to a reality that has now disappeared.
In Traub’s images there is a clear intention to “capture the experience of loss with a camera.”
The exhibition is curated by Magazzini Fotografici (Naples). On this occasion, Il Meccanico will also present Skid Row, Charles H. Traub’s photobook, published in 2023 by Lazy Dog.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from January 9, 2026, to January 31.

Charles H. Traub (born 1945, Louisville, Kentucky; lives and works in New York) is a photographer and educator. He studied photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel, and Garry Winogrand. In the late 1970s, he served as Director of the Light Gallery in New York. He is currently President of the Aaron Siskind Foundation and Chair of the MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts, New York. His photographic work is held in major collections, including George Eastman House, Rochester; MoMA, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and ICP, New York. Recent books include Skid Row (2023), Dolce Via Nova (2022), Taradiddle (2018), No Perfect Heroes (2016), Lunchtime (2015), Vision Anew (2015), Dolce Via (2014), Object of My Creation (2011), Charles H. Il Meccanico espone Skid Row, una raccolta di ritratti scattati dall'autore alla fine degli anni '70 nelle aree marginalizzate di Uptown Chicago e nella Bowery di New York.
Attraverso le sue immagini in bianco e nero, Traub cerca di catturare la dignità e l’umanità degli abitanti e dei senza tetto di queste zone. Nel tempo, molte delle aree fotografate sono state trasformate dalla gentrificazione, cancellando gran parte della loro storia e cultura, rendendo il lavoro di Traub una testimonianza importante di una realtà ormai scomparsa. Charles H.
